Staff of Albany Med’s Breast Center gathered with our partner, Libby's Legacy Breast Cancer Foundation, to officially open the nation’s second “Pink Ribbon Garden Project” at a ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning. The Pink Ribbon Garden Project was founded by Libby's Legacy Breast Cancer Foundation, in partnership with singer/songwriter and breast cancer survivor Melissa Etheridge to bring healthy foods to breast cancer patients. Breast cancer survivors will oversee the garden and harvest produce for their families and the families of patients currently undergoing treatment.
Albany Med is a proud sponsor of the garden. Albany Med salutes Nurse Clinician Vina Kessler, who was honored this week with a DAISY Award for outstanding patient care.
Albany Med Physician Assistant Katrina Abdalla passed Vina in the Albany Med hallway and recognized her as the nurse who cared for her infant son in February 2016 following surgery to improve hearing loss. The care Vina gave her child has stayed with her. In her nomination, Katrina wrote: “I always felt that, because of his inability to hear, he just wanted to be touched and held. When I went to see him, Vina was loving on him and snuggling him as if he were her own child.
She left such a positive impression. Nurses are what makes medicine.” Thank you, Vina, for all you do to care for our patients! Every April for the past six years, Burek has organized his Hope Soars 5K walk/run in Albany's Washington Square Park and the Corning Preserve to benefit the Parkinson’s Research Fund. Burek (right) has been cared for by Eric Molho, MD, director of the Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center at Albany Med, the only center of its kind in the region. Albany Med Outpatient Physical TherapyWe are excited to announce that Dr. Isabelle Matejovsky, PT, DPT, NCS has joined the staff at Albany Med OPPT. Isabelle trained at NYU Langone Health Rusk Rehabilitation and has her board certification in Neurologic PT with a specialization in vestibular therapy.
She is accepting patients of all diagnoses but is particularly interested in helping patients with dizziness, vertigo, balance, and vestibular deficits return to an active life. Isabelle joins a team of 15 clinicians who are dedicated to serving their patients, and improving their quality of life. Albany Med today announced that James Barba, who has served as president and chief executive officer of Albany Medical Center since 1995 and changed the face of health care in the Capital Region over the past 40 years, will be retiring on March 31, 2020.

3, 2009, Bernie Phillips, then 48, of Schenectady, went into sudden cardiac arrest. His wife immediately started CPR and called 9-1-1. After several agonizing minutes, first responders finally restored a pulse. At Albany Med, emergency medicine doctors successfully used therapeutic cooling to lower his body temperature to minimize any potential brain damage.
Today, Bernie remains grateful for the life-saving care he received at Albany Med, continues to see his cardiologist at Albany Med regularly and remains active by working out and cycling. First responders and staff from The Massry Family Children’s Emergency Center at Albany Med, the region’s only pediatric emergency department, were reunited with pediatric trauma patient Lucas Scherl, 16, of Gansevoort, during a dinner recognizing area EMS providers at the Hilton Garden Inn in Albany. Scherl, injured while mountain biking at Moreau Lake State Park, was the first pediatric trauma case when the pediatric emergency department opened July 31, 2018.

Albany Med’s Division of Pediatric Endocrinology hosted a presentation May 21 for young adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and their parents. It focused on adjusting to life after high school. It featured Kate Hall, a nationally ranked track and field athlete who shared her journey living with T1D.
Tom Hoffman Jr., CEO of Hoffman’s Car Wash and Jiffy Lube, spoke on his experiences living with T1D and offered advice to young adults with the disease entering the workforce. Also, Craig Kimmelblatt, a UAlbany psychologist, covered tips on college mental health services. Finally, a panel of young adults with T1D discussed adjusting to life after high school.
